Whilst watercolours may seem a little intimidating, if you have never used them before,  aquarelle/watercolour pencils may be useful as an introduction to the medium, and with this in mind I have just created a couple of charts to demonstrate how two different sets of pencils work.   I used a  brush with water cartridge to add the water.  Watercolour pencils may be more convenient  to use when on location, especially for the beginning artist.  I am taking a departure from my regular personal work to create samples and explanatory charts for my art classes.  The variety of pencils that are available is quite amazing.  Whilst it is an expensive outlay if you want to trial all of them in order to make an informed decision as to your preferences, there are opportunities to try materials out in many art outlets.  Having watched a youtube on Derwent Inktense pencils,  I am interested in trying them out - perhaps they will be my next purchase.
