Today, on facebook, I discovered an artist that I had never heard of but instantly liked the work. Upon researching the name, Luther Emerson Van Gorder, I discovered the reason why I had instantly warmed to his work. He studied in New York under C.Y Turner and William Merritt Chase. Chase had been exposed to Renoir, Monet and Degas - all artists in my favourite category.
Van Gorder (1861-1896) lived and worked in Paris from 1894-1896. His works include many Parisian street and market scenes. This lit scene has a distinct impressionist feel and the figures of the girls a Degas/ Renoir flavour! I will find other works and post them later. This is the kind of work I love and am inspired by!
